Newest Chevrolet Impala Outscores Competition

The redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Impala sedan has earned the top spot in the most recent round of testing by the trusted magazine Consumer Reports.  With this top-notch recommendation, this is the first time a U.S.-based brand has been named#1 for the first time in at least 20 years.

The newest Chevy Impala in Tacoma scored 95 out of 100 points in the magazine’s testing to get an “Excellent” rating.  The performance of the 2014 Impala is a sign of the three Detroit automakers’ renaissance, said Jake Fisher, the magazine’s chief auto tester. All three companies nearly collapsed into financial ruin just four years ago, partly because of their reputation for shoddiness.

“We’ve seen a number of redesigned American models — including the Chrysler 300, Ford Escape and Fusion, and Jeep Grand Cherokee — deliver world-class performance in our tests,” said Jake Fisher, the magazine’s director of auto testing.

The Impala surprised the magazine’s auto testers with its ride, agility, braking, high-quality materials and quiet, roomy cabin, Fisher said. Its score was 32 points higher than the previous model, a noisy sedan with uncertain handling that mainly was sent to rental car lots.

“It really doesn’t fall down in any area, and it does a lot of things really well,” Fisher said of the 2014 version. “The car rides better than a Lexus ES. It’s quieter than many luxury cars. It accelerates and brakes better than, say a Volkswagen GTI. It’s extremely roomy.”

In addition, the car’s interior controls, including its electronics, are simple and easy to use, a problem that has sunk many a luxury car in the magazine’s testing, including the Cadillac XTS, which shares the same underpinnings as the Impala, Fisher said.

The Impala also is too new to have much of an impact on Chevrolet sales. For the first half of the year, GM sold just over 83,000 Impalas, down 15 percent from the first six months of last year. GM is hoping the new car will revive the full-size segment, where sales have been falling for years due largely to old models that had not been updated.

The old Impala, which will live on as a car sold to fleets, was on the market for eight years since its last redesign in 2005. Fisher conceded that many won’t believe the Impala is so good because they remember the old version.

Demand For New Subaru Hybrid Climbs

We’ve said that before, and before the end of the year, we’ll know much more about the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid that was unveiled at last spring’s New York Auto Show.

But it turns out that Subaru now has two unexpected hits on its hands.

In Japan, the company announced, it received 5,850 orders for the Crosstrek Hybrid in just two weeks–fully 10 times the monthly sales target of 550 units.

In other words, orders are almost double the total hybrid production allocated to the Japanese market from now through December.

At the hybrid launch four months ago, Subaru said it expects hybrid orders to be 10 to 15 percent of total Crosstrek sales.

But the XV Crosstrek itself is flying out of dealerships in the U.S.–with sales running roughly double what the U.S. company had projected.

In fact, combined global demand for the Impreza line, the Crosstrek, and now the Hybrid is so high that the factory that makes all those models is running flat out.

Subaru communications chief Mike McHale told us that Subaru in the U.S. had to give up some of its allocation of Impreza compact hatchbacks and sedans to get the even-more popular XV Crosstrek instead.

The company continues to post rising sales numbers, but already, the Crosstrek is the fourth most-popular Subaru sold here since going on sale last September.

So far, in the first six months of the year, Subaru has sold almost as many Crosstreks (25,090) as Impreza sedans and hatchbacks combined (29,553).  The Impreza WRX, still built on the last-generation Impreza, added an additional 9,553 units.

Subaru’s two most popular vehicles in the U.S. are the Outback and Forester crossover.  The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid will officially launch late this year.  Pricing and its final EPA gas-mileage ratings haven’t yet been released.

The Special Edition 2014 Corvette Stingray

Though the U.S. is more excited for the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray than any other vehicle, Chevrolet is still adding to the excitement with an even more special ‘vette.  The automaker announced a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Special Edition.

This past week, Chevrolet debuted the Premiere Edition Corvette Stingray, of which only 500 will be made. The car is essentially a completely loaded Stingray coupe with some unique appearance upgrades and special luggage.

The car will have the Corvette’s optional performance exhaust system and the Z51 performance package, which includes magnetic ride control, limited-slip differential and additional cooling systems.  Two transmissions will be available: A seven-speed manual transmission with automatic rev-matching, or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

All Premiere Stingrays will be painted Laguna Blue and will feature a tan suede interior and carbon fiber roof panel. The car will be fitted with a custom luggage set from Thule.

Because this version of the new Chevrolet Corvette in Tacoma comes with the performance exhaust system, it will be rated at 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Last week, Chevrolet announced that this model would do zero-60 mph in 3.8 seconds.  Corvettes without the optional exhaust system will have 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All versions announced to date will get that power from a 6.2-liter, direct-injected V-8.

The Exclusive 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV

The new Chevy Spark in Tacoma has an electric version which boasts a combined city and highway range of over 80 miles when fully charged. This works out to nearly 120 MPGe according to the federal government. It is estimated by Chevrolet that the the Spark EV owners can save well over $8,000 in fuel expenditures over five years of wonership. If the car is truly capable of such a feat in the real world remains to be seen, but with an eight year, 100,000 mile warranty on its L-Ion battery pack, the buyers will have every opportunity to put the Spark EV through its paces.

The Spark EV has an oil cooled 100kW DC motor at its heart, utilizing coaxial drive. The BHP equivalent works to 130 horses and a stunning 400 ft.-lbs of torque. GM says that the Spark EV will be capable of posting a 0-60 time of under eight seconds.

To put these performance figures into perspective the gasoline powered Spark, with its 1.2-liter inline four-cylinder engine.  With the EV you may be limited in range, but you’ll be able to blow the doors off of any other econobox on the road today.

Fortunately, the Chevrolet Spark EV will shortly be offering what is called “DC Fast Charging.” This optional feature, when installed in an owner’s home, will enable the Spark EV to charge up to 80 percent battery capacity in about 20 minutes. Best of all, the Spark EV’s battery pack is designed to absorb multiple such charges per day. If your circumstances don’t permit the rapid charger, standard dedicated household 240 volt charging can still be completed in less than seven hours.

No matter which method is employed, it will be manageable through the Spark EV’s standard smart phone application which is offered through OnStar free of charge for three years.

The New Chevrolet Silverado 1500

With technology constantly improving, especially in the automotive industry, the folks who win out are the buyers.  With each passing year, Chevrolet offers vehicles that are more powerful, offer higher fuel-efficiency and come with a huge amount of tech, even on the basic trims.  The new Chevrolet Silverado in Tacoma is on its way, and next year’s model has plenty of improvements to go around.

Chevrolet has always been the automaker to go to when you’re looking to get the most for your money.  In an industry where catch words like “turbocharging” and “Eco” may catch your eye, it’s trucks like the Silverado that keep your attention.

Truck buyers can expect both a V6 and V8 version of the new Silverado.  Buyers can choose between a high level of performance for heavy loads and large hauling, or a more fuel-efficient version for those who will spend more time on the streets, traveling while needing the occasional big push.

The New Subaru Forester

Subaru has released pricing information for the all-new Forester which will be released later this year. Pricing for the new Subaru Forester in Tacoma will begin around $22,000, with premium trim offered around $28,000. This new Forester will come with Subaru’s symmetrical AWD and class-leading all-wheel-drive fuel efficiency with a rating of 32 MPG on the highway.

The current 2013 Subaru Forester model also uses the symmetrical AWD system, designed for excellent control, high efficiency and a safer response time in tough weather and road conditions. All Subaru vehicles have a large amount of safety and convenience features as well as IIHS’ Top Safety Pick award. Subaru is the only automaker to have every one of its models receive this honor.

The Forester is the perfect size utility vehicle; a true adventurer with plenty of space and trail capabilities. There is also plenty of advanced technology, like GPS Navigation, USB and MP3 ports, as well as Bluetooth hands-free system.

2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek

The crossover SUV segment is filled with stiff competition.  Fortunately for Subaru, the XV Crosstek is a superior vehicle with excellent ratings in all areas.  The 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek in Tacoma has some of the best safety scores in the industry and estimated furl rating of 33 MPG on the highway and 25 MPG in the city.

This crossover SUV is based on the Subaru Impreza, but was given a larger body and higher ground clearance.  It also has standard AWD for tough terrain adventures, making the 33 MPG capabilities that much more impressive.  It is also considered a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle because of its low emissions count.

Standard features on the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek include Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, 17-inch alloy wheels, raised roof rails and Vehicle Dynamics Control.  Optional features include voice-activated GPS navigation, Satellite radio, HD radio, power moonroof, leather-trimmed upholstery, automatic climate control, CVT LIneartronic transmission.

The midsize car segment grows more competitive each year.  In order to stay on top, Buick has updated the Regal, including powertrain options and technology.  Not only is the Buick Regal in Tacoma ranked in the top of its class, it has also been given the ’2013 Best Upscale Midsize Car for the Money’ award.

Buick’s eAssist engine is now the standard powertrain for the base model Regal.  Though this system is not considered a full hybrid system, with this powertrain, the Regal has a fuel rating of 36 MPG on the highway and 25 MPG in the city.  A turbocharged engine option is available, providing 220 horsepower and 260 lb ft of torque, with a fuel rating of 29 MPG capabilities.

The Regal is one of the most sophisticated and comfortable midsize sedans available.  As it has been deemed the midsize to give you the most for your money, it is the best investment for those who appreciate style, comfort, luxury and fuel-efficiency.
